Christine and the Queens - Girlfriend (Single Review)
After her extremely successful debut Chaleur Humaine, French singer Christine and the Queens is back with the lead single from her upcoming second album.
Whilst her first album was a synthpop and freakpop masterpiece all in French (and later translated for the US and UK rerelease) her new single 'Girlfriend' comes in English but has an all French version titled 'Damn, dis-mois'. Both versions feature Dâm-Funk.
'Girlfriend' is infused with funk, provided of course by Dâm-Funk, and has a very chilled beat and flow, synths gliding along this track as smoothly as her voice does.
Possibly it's a bit simple lyrically compared to that which resided on her debut album, but honestly that's fine by me for a lead single, so long as on the upcoming album we get to hear some more of her masterful songwriting skills.
Overall I'd say that this synth-funk jam has to be one of the best songs I've heard all year, I can definitely see it growing throughout the summer.
Catchiness: 4/5
Chorus: 3/5
Production: 4/5
Flow: 5/5
Vocals: 4/5
Overall I'd have to rate this an 8/10.
