The 1975 - Give Yourself A Try (Single Review)
After over a year of teasing, The 1975 are back with brand new single 'Give Yourself A Try', a distorted but simplistic jam.
It starts with that looping, extremely distorted guitar riff that pairs well with the simple but effective drumming. The bass isn't complicated, it's got minimal impact on the song. None of it is incredible, it's all just very good but quite basic.
Matty's vocals are often a selling point of a 1975 song, but here they're so laidback and lacking the usual attraction of being emotional and therefore they don't draw you in nearly as much as on a song like 'Robbers' or 'Somebody Else'.
Perhaps a highlight of the song is the lyrics, being less fun than usual but still sharp and socially/politically inclined. The chorus is very repetitive and a bit lack-luster, however it's just as catchy as the rest of the song is.
Many of the points I've mentioned may seem very negative. To me this song is very, very good it just doesn't hold up against many of their other songs. I love the looping, heavily distorted guitar riff and most of the rest of the song, but it lacks a certain magic The 1975 usually always capture.
Overall, this is a great return from The 1975 and I'm extremely excited to see the band back even if they're making things a bit too simple on their lead single.
Catchiness: 4
Chorus: 3
Production: 4
Flow: 4
Vocals: 3
Overall I'd rate this an 8/10.
