July/August 2018 Music Recap
Notable Albums
Florence + The Machine - High As Hope
A successful endeavor into more delicate and minimalist alternative pop that sees Florence's lyrics improve massively and the less bombastic instrumentation really supports that. "June" is a beautiful opener and "Grace" remains one of my absolute favourites.
Kids See Ghosts - Kids See Ghosts
It took me some time to get into this but it really is an incredible album. The psychedelic rock influences the grungey rap to really excell both Kanye and Kid Cudi's performance on this. "Reborn" is a longer, fully accomplishing song that deserves a tonne of praise.
Capital Cities - Solarize
Instrumentally speaking this is a very, very good synthpop album. It definitely lacks in certain qualities but its a fun and thoroughly enjoyable album, if a little long. Both "Gatekeeper Julie" and "Drifting" are highs on this album.
Ben Khan - Ben Khan
An energetic and promising debut for a young artist with vast soundscapes and fast paced instruments and progressions. This is clearly very good indie pop. "Monsoon Daydream" is a catchy single that I keep playing from this.
Let's Eat Grandma - I'm All Ears
This is another very good indie pop album that deserves all the recognition it is getting. Quirky synths, samples and vocals all characterise this album, giving it a distinct personality with excellent standout songs. "Hot Pink" is a fantastic example of a highlight, definitely listen to it.
Yonaka - Teach Me To Fight
This is an EP with fire from beginning to end. I saw this band live half a year ago when they opened for The Amazons and they've grown so much from them. All 4 of these songs are absolute bangers with sharp production and aggressive lyrics and guitars. Although this band is still very much indie rock, there are certain pop elements that only elevate these songs and I am grateful for them.
