Top 10 Hit Songs 2017

2017 was an interesting year for music with definite highs and some incredible albums but also an overabundance of slow, similar rap and R&B that seemed to dominate the mainstream like nothing else. For this list I'll be listing my personal Top 10 favourite hit songs in the UK. Anything that debuted on the Year End Top 100 chart will applicable.

Honourable Mentions

Post Malone, Quavo - Congratulations

Charlie Puth - Attention

Ed Sheeran - Castle On The Hill

Those songs that should've been much more successful than they were:

Kesha - Praying

The xx - On Hold

Paramore - Hard Times

And now for my Top Ten Best Hits Songs Of 2017:

10

Dua Lipa - Be The One

This is a fun, pop jem that can be enjoyed all the time. It is just as light and free as it was when it first charted and what a relief it did. It debuted at no. 50 on the end of year charts.

9

The Weeknd, Daft Punk - I Feel It Coming

The Weeknd is a hit and miss artist and this is from a hit and miss album but with Daft Punk on the smooth, retro production this becomes a memorable and interesting song to remember. Really Daft Punk just need to produce all of The Weeknd's songs, it clearly brings out the best in him.

8

Calvin Harris, Frank Ocean, Migos - Slide

2017 was the year Calvin Harris got good at producing and instead of making trendy EDM song after trendy EDM song after..
Well, the point is he broke his own formular and make a good solid album with this phenomenal dancey tune. From the odd but unforgettable intro to the extremely funky beat and odd combination of Frank Ocean and Migos on vocals, this song really shouldn't work but it really, really does!

7

Katy Perry, Skip Marley - Chained To The Rhythm

This is a rather depressing song and perhaps one of Katy Perry's last big hits given the sloppy reception her flavourless album Witness got. Who knows though, in the future she may come back and bag more hits but for now this is her last and best. It isn't exactly a sad song but it feels that way listening to it with the knowledge that the album flopped and all other singles besides "Swish Swish" completely underperformed. A few years ago she was one of the two biggest female pop stars but now... This songs seems to be a statement of the position Katy's in and it hits hard.

6

The Chainsmokers - Paris

This band delivered one of the worst albums of the 21st Century but this as the lead single? Fantastic. The synth swells of the chorus and the simple but catchy lyrics are just so good to listen to. It will always be fun to dance to and hasn't grown old even a year and a half later. I commend this duo on delivering such a fun song in their worst year for music so far.

5

Kygo, Selena Gomez - It Ain't Me

Kygo is a good dance musician but his songs often fall short due to generic and mediocre instrumentation that lacks in depth or drive. His features are very often excellent but he doesn't always back them up like he should and this results in bad songs. When he gets it right though he makes tremendous tracks just like this one. Selena is great here with her compelling chorus and lyrics. Kygo supports this with some of his best production and a great drop that flows so well with the rest of the song.

4

Harry Styles - Sign Of The Times

Who knew he'd come out with such a solid album featuring such a powerful song as the lead single, the flagship of his solo discography. This is a song that builds and builds and delivers, something so satisfying to hear and thoroughly accomplishing as a song.

3

Disciples - On My Mind

This deep house trio have a few songs at the moment, they're best known for their collaboration with Calvin Harris and Ina Wroldsen "How Deep Is Your Love", one of the biggest songs of 2015. "On My Mind" became their second hit and really stayed in my memory throughout the year and still now. It is one of those times where the song is incredibly catchy and elevated by how much the chorus sticks in your mind. I couldn't not hear this song, it grew on me so much after only a couple of listens and stands out as a highlight of the year.

2

Kendrick Lamar - HUMBLE.

My favourite hit rap song of 2017 and an unforgettable smash by such a talented young artist, he's been working so hard to get to the level he's on which is completely separate from all other rappers in my opinion. He's just so creative and unique in how he tells a story, it's so great listening to any of his songs. With "HUMBLE." you can either move with it or just sit down and appreciate it. It makes no difference as this song is fire either way.

1

Lorde - Green Light

Here we are at the end, at a pop song that really just barely made it onto this list. It is from her sophomore album Melodrama, a truly flawless and poppy experience that grows to greater levels of excellence and importance with each listen. And this song, the lead single, is the staple of what pop should be. The swelling pianos, huge chorus and energetic production all contribute along with the spiteful lyrics and brilliant atmosphere to make the epitome of a pop song.

I hope you enjoyed my list whether or not you agreed with my choice of songs. I've had lots of fun putting this together and I can't wait to do lots of End Of Year lists in December. I am happy to make more lists of previous years considering I only started this blog in April as I thoroughly enjoy making coundown style posts. If you ever have any suggestions of music to review or topics to cover leave them in the comments and I should do it.
