Django Django - Winter's Beach (EP Review)
This 6-track EP is extraordinary experimental synthpop and dance music from start to finish.
After releasing their third studio album in January, Django Django are back already with a great new EP. The instrumental introductory track "Winter's Beach" kicks everything off with some nice atmospheric synthesizers. This leads swiftly into "Sand Dunes". In fact, it touches on the refugee crisis but has an appropriately bright, hopeful chorus that contrasts the dark beat and instrumentation..
This is in turn followed by the energetic single "Swimming At Night", with its simple, typical Django Django beat and somewhat meaningless but fun lyrics. It's probably the least interesting song here but is in no way bad or even forgettable, in fact it's quite fun and catchy. Check out my full review here: My review
Next comes the crazy "Flash Forward", an intense synth-driven song that somehow manages to contain a dog bark and remain completely serious music. Completely serious. Completely. This is definitely my favourite on the EP, it has a phenomenal beat and great flow. Just wait for the build and beat drop. The music is aggressive and fast-paced and wonderfully constructed.
"Ghost Rider" has yet another dark beat, this one oddly oriental and deserving of being played in some action movie in Tokyo. The final song is "Blue Hazy Highs", a different vibe and feel to the rest of the EP but very pleasant and slightly psychedelic in a blue hazy sort of way. It's quite beautiful, gliding along and quite effectively juxtaposing everything that came before it and perhaps surpssing it.
Overall this EP is definitely worth an 8 out of 10.
