September Music Recap
Notable Albums
Troye Sivan - Bloom
A flavoursome pop album that shows real growth from Troye's dull debut, there is so much more emergy and emotion than he's ever portrayed before. All in all it still sounds restrained most of the time but as pop albums go this is pretty good. Definitely listen to the single "Bloom".
Boston Manor - Welcome To The Neighbourhood
This album came out of nowhere. Their 2016 debut was energetic, punky but terribly unoriginal whereas this has a fresher, more original sound that incorporates synthesizers, poppy choruses and retaining and perhaps building on the dark themes and atmosphere that Boston Manor are all about. Almost every song on here is a solid rock jam, in particular the loud and potent "England's Dreaming" and the slightly introspective but sonically epic "Bad Machine".
Mitski - Be the Cowboy
This is pop seen through an indie filter. In fact, it may just be one of the most brilliantly creative and fresh pop albums of the decade, alongside the likes of Lorde in some ways. It's short but impactful, smart and witty with some of the best metaphors this side of complete obscurity. It's almost a shame that most of these songs sound unfinished and underproduced or it might have had a chance for best album of the year but unfortunately the music just isn't as interesting as the lyrics. A song that really stands out with excellence throughout is "Washing Machine Heart".
Idles - Joy as an Act of Resistance.
Angry, grungey, driven indie rock without any sort of filter whatsoever, this band gets real on every song with banger after banger after banger. It may take a few minutes to get into the singer's voice but when it clicks it really clicks. So many bands aim to be this balance of pretentious, smart and fun but Idles are one of the few to make it work. From "Colossus" to "June" and "Rottweiler", this album is worth your time.
Bad Sounds - Get Better
This is quite simply just a fun listen with some big tunes and cool sampling and synth sounds. It isn't consistently interesting in the same way MGMT are but it feels similar in sounds to "Oracular Spectacular". If there's one standout song it's "Couldn't Give It Away", one of the slowest songs on the album and definitely the smoothest.
Black Honey - Self Titled
This band could quite easily be the next big thing with their massive choruses, catchy lyrics and great blend of guitars and synths, rock and pop. Delivering a delicious and diverse set of genres and sounds, this is some of the best indie pop I've heard. Unfortunately the world is stuck with the likes of Pale Waves and Christine and the Queens getting all the indie pop fame. The best song is either "Midnight" or "Into The Nightmare" in my opinion.
Also don't miss APRE's EP "Drum Machine's Killed Music" and First Aid Kit's EP "Tender Offerings".
