Twenty Øne Piløts - Trench (Album Review)
Wow. Over 3 years since their last album and 2 years since their breakthrough into mainstream success and TOP are back with maybe their best work yet.
Their new sound is driven by some fantastic beats and some of their most interesting concept lyric work. Despite it being a very consistent album that fits the above description, the lead single and opening track "Jumpsuit" is completely different, a sort of gigantic rock opera with a booming, thundering bass guitar and some of the most powerful lyrics and vocals. Tyler actually screams near the end of the song, a raw and tremendous moment of anguish that reverberates throughout the rest of the album. Although sonically it is the anomalous song, the more you listen to the rest of the album the more it makes a strange sort of sense. It is the beginning of the masterpiece that Trench is and is followed by the standout hip-hop influenced song, the rap "Levitate". This is where the band soars higher still, propelled by my favourite beat of the year and carried by some of the best lyrics and flows. This is then followed by "Morph" with its excellent beat, lyrics and flow. It has fantastic progression and perfect vocal emphasis. I could go on to talk about every song on the album like this but it's better to group some together instead. "My Blood", "The Hype" and "Chlorine" are all very poppy and fun, whilst "Pet Cheetah", "Neon Gravestones" and "Bandito" are more dark and interesting. "Leave The City" is a perfectly emotional closer and the rest just don't stand out enough to me. "Nico And The Niners" is definitely a great song but it just blends in a bit too much and lacks some of the pull factors that come in plenty with some of the other cuts. The rap is excellent but it takes a long time to get there and it can be dull on repeated listens.
Overall I'd give this album an 8.5 out of 10. It's peaks are strong and come round often with almost every song sounding like it achieves what it set out to do.
Best Songs:
Jumpsuit, Levitate, Morph, My Blood, Chlorine, Neon Gravestones, Pet Cheetah, Leave The City
Worst Song:
Cut My Lip
