Foster the People - Worst Nites (Song Review)

They've definitely gone down hill with their brand new single "Worst Nites".

Instrumentally, it goes absolutely nowhere, the beat feeling lightweight and without substance; the vocals and lyrics are generic poppy and dull and the production is much the same, lacking any flavour or drive.

The lyrics are clichéd and don't say anything at all interesting, with lines in the underwhelming chorus like "All my worst nights are the best times" and "good kind" and cringey lines like "west coast stealing all my shut-eye". Perhaps the worst lyric is in the second verse, with Mark stating "cruise the 'Gram and now I'm catching feels".

When listening it sounds like it should build up to something but in fact absolutely nothing happens. The beat pretty much loops throughout with none of the usual flares of interesting production that was commonplace on their first two albums, and none of the poppy fun that was on their third. It just sounds incredibly bland, more like a Maroon 5 or One Republic song but without the big chorus.

I really hope this isn't the lead single to their 4th album but I fear they'll only continue to go down this route into uninteresting and boring weightless pop. On a more positive note, make sure to check out my Top Ten Best Foster the People Songs.

Catchiness: 3/5
Instrumentation: 1/5
Lyrics: 1/5

Overall I have to rate this a light 2 out of 10. In my opinion this is the band's worst song to date, and one I hope they swiftly move away from. As Ariana would say: Thank you, next!
