Zero 7 - Mono (Song Review)
Definitely a welcomed return for this ambient artist and one that certainly delivers.
It's been over three years since their last material dropped, an EP that lead to nothing. I thought perhaps they wouldn't record any more music together, especially given their last album was back in 2009. Despite a long absence the duo are back with a new and surprisingly quite poppy return.
The song features Hidden and his vocals have great chemistry with the tone of the song - wistful and wanting. The chorus is quite big although the final one lacks a certain drive that would cap the song off quite nicely.
The beat is also very good, if a little generic. The attentions to detail in the production are excellent and it has an exceptional flow.
My main problem with the song is that it's just not particularly original; the duo have done similar things before and done it better. I enjoy the song, it's great background music but it doesn't hold up against a more driven, original song.
Atmosphere: 4/5
Catchiness: 3/5
Instrumentation: 3/5
Lyrics: 3/5
Production: 4/5
Overall this song gets a very, very light 7 out of 10. It's good but it could be much better.
