Ariana Grande - Imagine (Single Review)
I begin to wonder how worthwhile it is to continue reviewing each new single Ariana releases when every time she seems to decline in quality and deliver something less compelling than before.
It has been a huge year for Ariana Grande, one of the biggest names in pop music right now and perhaps one of the most interesting. She may have had one of the most turbulent times of any modern popstar but one way she's been consistent in is her release of more music, something it seems she will continue with as she plans the release of her fifth studio album, still just months after her massive success Sweetener. I reviewed Sweetener on my blog and gave it a fairly negative review - I didn't enjoy the looping, generic beats or the boring songs and often dull or just awful lyrics. I did however enjoy the lead single "No Tears Left To Cry" with its big chorus and great verses although it definitely lacked the drive of some of her previous works.
When she announced a new album titled "Thank U, Next" and released an eponymous single I was pleased but underwhelmed with the direction of her music. It wasn't exactly great but it was better than the majority of her previous album despite pandering to trends in pop as she always does.
On this brand new single "Imagine" she panders to lo-fi trap-pop trends in the worst way yet. The beat is unoriginal, minimalistic and doesn't build up to anything but the blocky, cheap final chorus that does nothing to sell the song. Ariana's vocals do not fit the song and sound strange against the beat and production. The bass is physically quite heavy but musically it carries no weight or substance. On top of all this, the lyrics are rushed and messy, possibly some of her worst lyrics ever; who was asking for Ariana Grande to say "skrrt" in a song? Also, the pre-chorus sounds like a rehash of her awful song "Sweetener", this time with lyrics about social media and her huge status as apposed to a cooking method, and then in the verses she says "ooh" in pretty the same way Taylor Swift did on "End Game", possibly her worst song.
In conclusion I can't be positive towards such an unoriginal, unengaging and underwhelming song. It sounds underwritten and underproduced resulting in a complete disaster of a song, one of Ariana's worst ever. I don't enjoy really a single bit of this song, least of all the lyrics and production.
Atmosphere: 1/5
Catchiness: 2/5
Instrumentation: 0/5
Lyrics: 0/5
Production: 0/5
Overall I am rating this a weak 1 out of 10, I truly think it is that bad. It might be too late for it to appear on this year's Worst Songs list since I've already published it but you best be sure that it'll be included on 2019's worst list. This is my opinion so don't hate me for hating the song, thank you for reading and make sure to check out some of my other posts.
