DaBaby - Blame It On Baby (Review)
DaBaby has hit the point in his career where he's copying himself...and his career has barely begun...

For an artist who not two years ago was considered one of the most promising new talents in hip hop, his career direction has been an incredibly stagnant one. Commercially he's never been bigger of course, but the tides have turned on his music and it seems like no-one has the patience for even the least offensive DaBaby guest verses. In fact, what's most offensive about DaBaby's verses tend to be their incredibly lacklustre quality, devoid of the fun energy that fuelled his earlier work. It's a huge shame that it's come to this, but DaBaby has proven over the course of his three albums that he's a one trick pony. Worse, the trick has been so overdone in such a short amount of time, each time feeling less enthusiastic and less driven by the supposed charisma that he's famed for.
The main problem is, unsurprisingly, the quantity over quality approach he takes. This is the third album he's released in a period of just 13 months, and I have no doubt the next one will be rolled out in a rushed release before the year's over. It's so clear now that the main motivator is money, something that would be fine if not for the inexcusable lack of effort that DaBaby is putting into his rapping; his flows are weak and on every song they're far too similar to the flow of "Suge", the song that put him on the map and the photocopied blueprint used for every single one of his songs since. Ask me to name any of the songs on this album and my first thought would likely be "hmm, this sounds like Suge but worse somehow...is this Bop?". The worst part is that, for as derivative of his own music he was on his last album, he at least managed to carry enough energy over from his debut for there to be some noticeable highlights on the album, but things were telling even then when the intro was the best song on the record. Here on Blame It On Baby, an album title as aptly forgettable as the tracks within, the energy has ran out and there's not a single new idea to be seen.
