REVIEW
Bear's Den offer a brief but aptly beautiful trio of wintry songs that act as a pleasant yet less accomplished companion to those on their last album. As with every Bear's Den project to date, all three of these songs boast a comfortingly warm atmosphere paired with the glorious Snow Patrol-esque vocals of Andrew Davie, as ever the centerpiece of the indie folk (now) duo. What impressed me so much with So that you might hear me was that album's ambition, incorporating electronic elements into their acoustic style even after losing a member, and performing this integration far more effectively than they ever did with the 80s pastiche that was Red Earth and Pouring Rain, in my opinion their worst album.
Here on Only Son of the Falling Snow, Bear's Den retreat into the familiar quiet but also recede instrumentally, reverting to a primarily acoustic sound but thankfully retaining the quality of emotive writing from STYMHM, as well as introducing some light but complimentary horn sections that add some much needed flavour to the mix, resulting in a pretty but less essential project than the last album. Worth your time, but it could easily be overlooked as average background music.
