Sunset Wrecks strikes again... on their new album Trickles into Gravity's Maw, the cacophonous industrial noise rock of Sunset Wrecks is in full force, serving up a massive, menacing and yet majestic album with a unique blend of elements usually reserved to Hans Zimmer's film scores and the barren wastes of post rock (see Caspian's On Circles), but here is utilised in making the very first new album I heard in 2020, and making it the grandest introduction to a year that has unfortunately lived up to the intense, dystopian aesthetic that this album is shrouded in. What I find most satisfying about the dreary, conquering atmosphere is that whilst it could so easily have been depressing and monotonous, a burden in a year that needs no extras in that lane, it instead manages to soundtrack the disasters in technicolour, the aforementioned massiveness and scale of this record obliterating any notions that this is a dull record and providing an album to be submerged by, an album to be enthralled by and, most importantly, an album to reflect to.
What Sunset Wrecks have done here is release a well crafted, expansive and engaging instrumental "rock" album that stands head and shoulders above its peers despite its complete obscurity and underappreciated excellence. This is not an album you can throw on at any time of the day and its certainly not a casual listen, but the more I let my mind integrate with the growling basslines, the ethereal pads and the unexpected rhythms, the more I am convinced that this right here is an album meant to help and not hinder in getting you through 2020, however impossible it was that Sunset Wrecks could have known that.
