PSA: SPEED KILLS!!! (The Ally Evenson Review)
Our ambitious young pop outsider captures the visceral anxieties and emotional whiplash of contemporary romance.
Barely a year after the explosive BLUE SUPER LOVE, Ally is back on the scene with a tighter, sillier, and equally honest album. From the careening car crash of 'Phetamines' and infectious hooks of 'Strawberry', Evenson's first singles introduced her sophomore album as a more polished but persistently experimental followup. In slightly narrowing the sonic sprawl, SPEED KILLS is undoubtedly a more focused record with arguably improved sequencing and a stronger narrative throughline. That being said, the anxious chaos and broader sonic variation of BLUE SUPER LOVE is missed here, and I find the last few tracks on SPEED KILLS to underwhelm me and miss out on a stronger closer to really bookend the album experience.
It's a small nitpick which, alongside the admittedly overcompressed production begging for some space to breathe on a couple of moments here, does lead to Speed Kills being a slight step down from her debut. Even so, Evenson (hehe) remains a strong voice on the scene and the album boasts enough standout songs to keep me returning over and over again, alongside a short film and striking visuals which complement and enrich the aesthetic appeal of the album. She'll go far, especially once a song like 'Strawberry' or 'Blame it on Me' blows up on TikTok. It's only a matter of time, right?
