May 2018 Music Recap

At the moment there is lots of fantastic music that's been put out into the world. With fantastic albums and loads of great songs, this has been a hard list to make. Here are my top five albums and singles:

Albums

5

IceAge - Beyondless

A controlled followup to their previous albums, this LP sees their sound in a more focused, motivated and excellent alternative rock direction. Some favourites for me are 'The day the music dies', 'Pain killer' and 'Take it all'. 8/10.

4

Chvrches - Love Is Dead

This is the band's third album and it's definitely their weakest with Greg Kurstin producing and ruining the majority of the songs. Luckily, Chvrches manage to still excell in enough songs. I absolutely love 'God's Plan', 'Graffiti', 'Graves', 'My Enemy', 'Get Out' and 'Really Gone'. Check out my full review of the album on this blog. 8/10.

3

Portico Quartet - Untitled (AITAOA #2)

This band creates the most beautiful art with every album, their debut being nominated for the Mercury Prize. Last year they released the absolutely fantastic cityscape and city life inspired ambient jazz Art In The Age Of Automation, one of their very best albums in my opinion, and this is their companion to that. Untitled may not match what it's a companion for but the selection of songs here are incredible. 8/10.

2

Aquilo - ii

One of my most anticipated albums of this year, it is a fantastic follow up to their debut last year. Indeed, the first half of the album is no disappointment but the latter half is slightly weaker, although even 'The Road Less Wandered' has grown on me. Some of my favourites from this album are 'I Could Fight On A Wall', 'Thin', 'Six Feet Over Ground', 'Now & Here' and 'Seagull'. 8.5/10.

1

Beach House - 7

It just barely bests Aquilo's sophomore, Beach House have here their best album for ages with so many highlights in 'Dark Spring', 'Pay No Mind', 'Drunk In L.A.' and 'Dive', one of the best songs of the year. This album is more wholesome in its sounds, a change for the dream pop band. 8.5/10.

Isn't it funny the top 2 albums are both dream pop duos with their album titles being numbers?

Singles

5

Christine and the Queens ft. Dâm-Funk Girlfriend

This synth-funk pop song is a great listen, I've reviewed it on this blog. 8/10

4

Chvrches - Really Gone

Picking between this and some of the others on Love Is Dead was hard but this is fantastic. It shows how vulnerable Lauren is through her gorgeous vocals. 9/10

3

Nine Inch Nails - God Break Down The Door

Nine Inch Nails are back and this lead single is great, perhaps very weird, but certainly excellent. Its synths and percussion are so different from anything I'd expect but it is great! 9/10

2

Austenyo - Personova/In My Mind

Wow. His music is so different but I immediately love it, both these songs being my favourites from his debut EP "Extended Playtime". Yes, I like 'Coffee' and 'Piano' too but these two songs are just phenomenal! Listen to these right now! 9/10

1

Girl Talk & Erick The Architect - Trouble In Paradise

THIS is rap gone right! This song is so summery, so fantastic, so simple and just perfect. It may not be appealing to everyone but for me there is just so much positive to say about this song. It's easily one of the best songs of the year so far. 9.5/10
