June 2018 Recap
Summer is here (in the form of a never-ending heatwave and festivals commencing each weekend) so let's take a look at the best music of June.
Albums
5
Nine Inch Nails - Bad Witch
They're back with another "album", this one a 6 track long experimental rock and complex return to form from the brilliant lead single 'God Break Down The Door' to the closing moment 'Over and Out'. 7.5/10
4
Claptone - Fantast
A fun and summery dance album with some flare to the interesting synthesizers and beats, Claptone proves himself to be the best faceless German DJ he can be. Songs like 'Stronger' and 'In The Night' are prime examples of how to perfect modern dance music. 8/10
3
Snail Mail - Lush
For fans of indie music, this album is a goldmine of charming tunes with character and depth delivered incredibly well for someone so young. It reminds me a bit of Declan McKenna's fantastic debut last year, so aware and talented at such a young age. 8/10
2
Father John Misty - God's Favourite Customer
An incredible singer songwriter album that excells in its lyricism, topics and relevancy. Perhaps not quite as excellent as last year's Pure Comedy but still a phenomenal listen, only time will tell how high this places on my year end list. 9/10
1
Pusha T - Daytona
This is definitely my favourite rap album this year so far, with its flawless flows and incredible lyrics, production and samples. From beginning to end this album soars, above all the other Kanye-produced albums from 2018 and way above Drake's atrociously boring Scorpion. Perhaps this is the best rap album since Kendrick's DAMN. or Run The Jewels 3. 9/10
Singles
5
Kungs - Be Right Here
I have always been a fan of this young talent; despite the genre he occupies, which is tropical house, he always finds new ways to do things. This song is already going to be one of my summer favourites, just as 'More Mess' was last year and 'This Girl' the year before. 8/10
Johnny Marr - My Eternal
Who knew 54 year old men made some of the best indie rock music of the decade? This song is proof that talent can extend beyond youth. 8.5/10
3
Gorillaz - Humility
This is a summer bop. One of the band's best songs. 9/10
2
St. Vincent - Fast Slow Disco
She essentially remixed her own song and made it infinitely better. Perhaps the mainstream neglects her but with the quality shs produces I certainly won't. 9/10
1
Panic! At The Disco - The Overpass
The album was a letdown and downright bad but this song is spectacular and entirely entertaining. 9/10
