Sundara Karma - Illusions (Single Review)

After their interesting indie rock debut last year, Sundara Karma's return has been one of my most highly anticipated. I expected that they would shift their sound to be more psychedelic but I didn't quite expect this.

"Illusions" is a beautiful five minute song with a cool repeating melody and a great drum beat that supports the song. It's a sound that incorporates a a more syncopated rhythm and some gorgeous instrumentation. The instrumental section of the song is an unexpected highlight where the guitar, drums, bass and synth works are all gorgeous, giving off a spiralling sort of vibe.

In fact, besides the lack of a multitude of synthesizers, this new single has the band sounding more like MGMT than the Arctic Monkeys or The Strokes. The drifting, shifting beat sounds like something off of Congratulations and the aforementioned exceptional instrumental is quite similar to that on "When You Die", a song from MGMT's most recent album.

Atmosphere: 4/5
Catchiness: 3/5
Instrumentation: 4/5
Lyrics: 4/5
Production: 4/5

Overall this is a great comeback single that makes me very excited for the band's upcoming second album. "Illusions" gets an 8 out of 10 from me.
