Poppy - I Disagree (Review)

Poppy is an oddball, quite literally design, and so it was only going to be a shame when this album turned out to be her least weird yet. Keep in mind I said weird and not instrumentally diverse and adventurous, as that she certainly remains and arguably goes further with that here than on her last album. No, Poppy lacking in the weirdness that has previously characterised her music is the first issue here, and I think I know why.
Beforehand, when switching seemingly incoherently between styles of music it was Poppy's strange lyrics and observations that held everything together, however random the instrumentals got, but here on I Disagree the genres might be switching in a similar way but it's what Poppy does with the genre that is different, choosing this time to mold to whichever genre she is occupying at that moment instead of bringing her very unique energy into the fold. Even in the midst of a fantastic moment, of which I'll admit there are many, it seems like Poppy isn't able to convey her previous character so much as she sounds like she's emulating her influences, which results in a lack of cohesion and a more significant lack of personality.
I hate to say it, but this is Poppy not understanding her own appeal. It's like she assumes the switch-ups between fierce metal riffs and retro pop hooks was what made her last album great, when that was just not the case. Still, there's a decent amount of content to enjoy, and "BLOODMONEY" remains one of her best songs, but the overall listening experience is a major step down.
