Angus & Julia Stone - A Book Like This (Review)

Timeless folk pop for the fervent hipster...
A Book Like This / 8 Sept 2007 / Capitol Records

Angus & Julia Stone have a particular way of delivering some of the most surprisingly earnest folk pop. Whilst far from original, the duality of their songwriting and performances is both bluntly intimate and dreamily fairytale - affecting concoctions that hit a rare balance and consistently strike the emotional core that I typically expect from the more peculiar Belle & Sebastian, or Beirut. Impressively, Angus & Julia Stone secure their place among the aforementioned greats, despite a significant lack of any real weirdness. Powering through on fervour and wonder alone, they achieved a brilliantly simple and memorable debut, and one that I have been returning to for years.
