Blossoms - Cool Like You (Album Review)
After the success of their incredible debut, Stockport indie rockers Blossoms are back with an explosive synthpop sophomore.
From the first song, 'There's A Reason Why', you're submerged in incredibly catchy synths and melodies. I originally thought it was a weak song for Blossoms but it's definitely grown on me a whole lot. As has the lead single 'I Can't Stand It', where Tom's vocals really shine alongside the instrumentation.
The title track 'Cool Like You' has a really interesting flow to it but some less standout synths. Then there are the songs 'Unfaithful' and 'How Long Will This Last?', two more phenomenal synthpop bangers. 'Between The Eyes' has a flow not dissimilar to their debut but some of the synths sound a bit over the top and similar to material from Hurts debut, not a positive comparison.
At this point in the album and especially with 'How Long Will This Last?' and 'I Just Imagined You', you notice the excellent backing vocals that really carry many of these songs and help Tom's great voice.
'Lying Again' is an immediately epic song with brilliant guitars, synths and vocals. Overall it's similar to Temples' songs on their album 'Volcano', an incredible dive into synthpop.
Overall the album, with all its highlights, is really amazing. The main problem I have is that most of the songs are very similarly paced, structured and sounding which is probably why I'm drawn to 'Stranger Still', a slower and more progressive song with some fantastic builds.
There's not a single song I dislike on the album, it really is up there with Temples' 'Volcano' and Chvrches 'Bones of What You Believe' in fantastic indie/synthpop albums.
I'm rating it an 8 out of 10.
The songs from worst to best in my opinion are:
11. Between The Eyes
10. Giving Up The Ghost
9. There's A Reason Why
8. I Just Imagined You
7. Love Talk
6. Unfaithful
5. Cool Like You
4. I Can't Stand It
3. How Long Will This Last?
2. Lying Again
1. Stranger Still
When I post my April Recap this album will likely be in the Top 5 of the month...
