October Music Recap
Notable Albums
Saint Sister - Shape of Silence
This quiet little indie album is a great night time record to go alongside the likes of The xx's debut, Aquilo's "Silhouettes" and other great minimalist alternative albums. It has a certain flame that burns behind the sparse instrumentation, a certain rock flare that comes out in songs like "Steady" and "You Never Call", two highlights from this album.
Matthew Dear - Little Dark Age (Remix Album)
Whilst MGMT's fourth album remains my favourite of the year, this young new artist Matthew Dear's remix of the entire album is also very good. It's a quirky experimental electronic album you shouldn't miss out on, especially if you enjoyed the original as much as I did. Some standouts are the remix of the title track and that of "James".
You Me At Six - VI
This is a surprisingly good, fun rock album with some very good songs on here with real energy, for instance the opener "Fast Forward" with its punky energy or the darker "IOU". It may not be particularly original or flawless but it has a certain charm to it.
Twenty Øne Piløts - Trench
What can I say? The beats, the lyrics, the sheer excellence. This is a phenomenal album with some extremely deep subject matters and a great twist of indie and hip hop. From beginning to end this album is a journey, an odyssey of greatness. Ignoring "Smithereens", that is. My favourites include "Jumpsuit", "Levitate", "Morph", "Pet Cheetah" and "Leave The City".
Parcels - Self-Titled
An unexpected but brilliant blend of indie and disco, this band enlightens the imaginery dancefloor in my bedroom. This is some of the freshest music around. A slowburning favourite would be "Withorwithout".
Cloud Nothings - Last Building Burning
This is a dark, indie rock album with some killer guitar riffs and really, really good lyrics. The topics and guitars are a perfect match for each other and the highs of this album greatly outweigh the lows. In my opinion the best songs are "Leave Him Now", "Offer An End" and "The Echo Of The World".
Kero Kero Bonito - Time 'n' Place
This is one of the best albums of the year, a fun indie pop explosion of emotion, fresh lyrics and exciting instrumentation, including buzzy synths, energetic guitars and quirky, unique vocals. It's an interesting mix of genres and makes for a great, brief listen, not unlike Mitski's Be The Cowboy. A great song on here would be "Flyaway".
