Spanish Love Songs - Brave Faces Everyone (Review)
I think this album's biggest strength is its lyrics, which I want to make clear are very good yes, but what I can't help but notice is how these lyrics probably wouldn't be perceived as quite as good if more pop punk had better lyrics. Now, that's not to detract from the extremely compelling, grounded and exposing approach to songwriting that is present and prevalent on this record. It's one of those occasions where I have to agree and comment the quality, but with that agreement comes an unfortunately necessary sidenote. PUP came with that sidenote also, but potentially to a greater extent.
Of course, there is more to this album than the lyrics... just, you know, not much. For one, this album's instrumentals are measured and precise, the band are great at deciding when they need to explode and when they need to be more restrained, it's just that the instrumentation itself is pretty simplistic and typical for the brand of music, regardless of the excellent production. If you're someone who loves guitar music, then probably you'll adore this record. If, like me, you're extremely fussy when it comes to what music you like from a variety of genres...yeah it might be pretentious but to me this has like 9 out of the 10 qualities mastered that I look for in an album. And...guess what my rating is.
